Fire safety is a crucial issue for everyone, especially at home.

Reports about home fires are on the news all the time, and unfortunately, we continue to have significant damage to properties and tragic loss of life when home fires occur.

Here are our 10 smoke alarm tips

  1. Be sure to install smoke alarms throughout your home even inside each bedroom.
  2. Choose smoke alarms that meet the latest safety standards.
  3. Make sure you test your smoke alarm batteries as well as your alarm.
  4. If your smoke alarms use replaceable batteries, test them monthly and replace them at least once a year.
  5. If they are hardwired, ensure they have battery backups in case of power outages.
  6. Consider replacing your smoke alarms even if they seem to be working fine.
  7. Place your smoke alarms on ceilings or high on walls, as smoke rises and tends to collect near the ceiling. Avoid installing smoke alarms near windows, doors, or ducts, where drafts might interfere with their operation.
  8. Make sure everyone in your household knows the sound of the smoke alarm and more importantly, know what to do when they hear it.
  9. What do I do if my smoke or carbon monoxide alarm is chirping intermittently? The same factors that cause unwanted alarms in smoke alarms (smoke detectors) and carbon monoxide alarms can cause intermittent alarms to have a low battery chirp to alert you to change the battery when its power is running low.
  10. Check that your smoke alarms are less than 10 years old, and replace them with photoelectric models for better detection.

Regular maintenance and testing of smoke alarms are essential to ensure they function properly and provide early warning in the event of a fire. Taking these precautions can significantly increase your chances of safely escaping a house fire.
